Our Story

About Charleston Biscuit Company
The search for an amazing gluten free biscuit began long ago when our founder was diagnosed with celiac disease in the early 2000's. As a Southern woman, with a long history of amazing Southern cooks in her family, this diagnosis was devastating. Memories of amazing biscuits from family suppers in Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina led us to re-create that quintessential of Southern baked goods using wholesome gluten free ingredients, in a recipe that anyone could follow. That resulted in the creation of glutenfreebiscuits.com and a new brand to promote these amazing gluten free biscuits: Charleston Biscuit Company. Named after our South Carolina home, and straight to the point of what we offer (biscuits), our brand has grown into a local and now national favorite. Over the past 7 years, a journey began to re-create the flavor and texture of those biscuits - made with simple ingredients - for those who can't have gluten. After working hard to match tastes with memories, a gluten free biscuit recipe was discovered that was so darn close, even family visiting from the Mississippi delta could not tell the difference. Now that's saying something. For more about the history of biscuits and Charleston, read on....

More on the History of Charleston and Biscuits
Our story begins in Charlestowne, Province of South Carolina...before it was known as Charleston, the British colonists of the early 1700's discovered that this area was perfect for the cultivation of rice. "Carolina Gold" rice, as it was known, became the most important crop and it soon became the most valuable export in the port of Charlestowne. Wheat flour was expensive and often finely ground rice was added to bread recipes in order to stretch ingredients. This led to very innovative recipes by local bakers, one of which was adapted for a common Southern specialty: biscuits. Rice breads were common hundreds of years ago in this city and we keep that tradition alive today for those who cannot eat gluten because of celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or preference.

From our family to yours, please enjoy the magic in these biscuits.

Simple Ingredients, Incredible Taste
Our biscuit mix is made of natural ingredients - things you would find in your own pantry. Everything is gluten free. It has to be because celiac disease or gluten intolerance is no joke. Our family is gluten free, so everything we make is gluten free, too. We will never make a product that contains gluten. Our products are batch-tested by Clemson University to ensure they're gluten free. Eating safely is a requirement in our household and making something for you that's safe is our priority. Providing something that's delicious and gluten free is our way of showing Southern hospitality. We hope you enjoy a taste of Charleston!

These are traditional biscuits - they go perfectly with sausage gravy, made into a piping hot breakfast sandwich, spread with some tangy pimento cheese, or served on their own with butter and jam! Charleston, our home
If you've never been to Charleston, put it on your bucket list. Founded in 1670, this was originally a walled city and was once the largest Southern city in British Colonial America. The history, the food, the cobblestones, the ocean, the breezes, the marsh, the pluff mud, the sweet grass basket weavers, the Lowcountry people - these things all make this city one unlike any other. Rainbow Row, Marion Square, the High Battery, City Market, King Street, the Pineapple fountain, the Ravenel Bridge, Shem Creek, the Angel Oak, Ft. Sumter, Folly Beach - they are just waiting to hold a special place in your memory, forever.
